Becoming a cranky geek

Back in the dotcom era I used to appear occasionally on ZDTV’s “Silicon Spin” and chew on the tech headlines with John Dvorak and other guests. Dvorak is doing pretty much the same thing once more, in somewhat less lavish circumstances but with a somewhat more honest name for the show — Cranky Geeks.

I joined the panel today for a lively discussion about Facebook’s Beacon ad-policy brouhaha; the mysterious firing of a GameSpot editor, apparently for panning an advertiser’s game; Google’s entry into the wireless spectrum auction; AMD’s CEO bad-mouthing Intel (which really doesn’t qualify as news, does it?); and more.

I dunno, Scott. I suppose for an author any face time is good face time, but I don’t know that I’d publicize that I had anything to do with John Dvorak. I stopped reading him back in the DOS days because of his incessant cluelessness. Watching as much as I could bear of that video podcast made me think the only people who could make it through to the end are those that also like Bill O’Reilly. He’s opinionated on topics he knows little about and interrupts way more than necessary. He either is a blowhard in actual fact, or he’s acting like one with the hope of landing a slot on Fox News. I’m not sure which is worse, but either way, it was a dreadful viewing experience.
