Now that I've read Baum's piece in full, instead of getting it by drip by drip on Twitter, I think you've been a bit uncharitable to him by making so much of his naivete.

It's not like Baum's unaware of his own shortcomings -- he alludes to them several times in the piece, even saying at one point, "I never held a job very long, either."

Baum seems like a pretty good study of human nature, even his own. I don't understand why so many people reading his story felt inspired to open up a can of whup-ass on him.

The single byline for the two of them makes perfect sense to me. My books profited enormously from critical reading by over a hundred people. However, I couldn't fit all those names on the cover.

I didn't use an editor and I didn't have a bureau chief -- which are the roles that his wife seems to fill -- but I doubt that I would have put them on the cover if I had.

Great post, Scott. I was scratching my head about the extremely clunky Twitter delivery prior to your explanation. I have to add that Baum's 'jaw-dropping moral' moment rang a bit disingenuous to me. I don't get the sense he'd really be that naive, but he played it that way in the service of... I don't know exactly what. Strange and fascinating moves by him, on several counts.

If you haven't seen it yet, Margaret Knox explains the working relationship she and Dan Baum have in the comments of the Tapped piece you linked.
