Great point about foreign oil consumption. Iranian petrodollars are re-cycled into arms for the Hezbollah and nuclear fuel development; Saudi petrollars help fuel the spread of Wahhabism as a foil to Iran's growing power. Were we to truly get on a war footing in the USA, accelerating alternatives to foreign oil would be a priority. However, the debate on how to do so should include all options -- coal, nuclear, domestic oil and gas as well as the popular and politically correct sources like solar, wind, etc. Are we serious enough to do so?
